The US president, Donald Trump, announced on Tuesday a 50% tariff to copper and indicated that he contemplates another of up to 200% for pharmaceutical products if their manufacturers are not installed in the United States.

In its cabinet meeting, the sixth since it began its second term on January 20, the Republican leader communicated without specifying the details that new tax for copper, which follows the similar applied for steel and aluminum.

Trump also threatened pharmaceuticals if they do not decide to be located in the country to precisely avoid the payment of tariffs.

“We will give you about a year, a year and a half, to come. Then tariffs will be applied if they have to bring pharmaceutical products, medications and other items. A very high tariff will be applied, of approximately 200%,” he said.

Trump continues with the imposition of new tariffs

The Republican president criticized that previous administrations allowed the relocation of that industry.

“Everyone left. They went to other places because people in this room allowed it to happen. And I did not allow it. People in this room do not allow it to happen,” he added before the members of his executive.

Its announcement comes a day before the initial term granted to the commercial partners is fulfilled to set new levies that replaced those considered reciprocal tariffs. At this time, Washington has only closed agreements with China, the United Kingdom and Vietnam, and has postponed to August 1 the 90 -day truce announced in April and expired on July 9.
