Washington, (EFE) .- President Donald Trump announced a new tariff agreement with Japan with “reciprocal” levies of 15%.
In a publication on the Truth Social platform, the president described the pact as “giant, perhaps the greatest ever achieved.”
He added that Japan will invest 550,000 million dollars in the US and that your country will keep 90% of the profits.
“This agreement will bring thousands of works (…) and Japan will open your country to trade, including cars, trucks, rice and other agriculture products,” said the president.
Trump’s announcement comes the same day as the Japanese negotiator in tariff matters, Ryosei Akazawa, said he aspired to reach an agreement with Washington before August 1.
For that date, Trump’s government had threatened to impose a 25% tariff on the importation of Japanese goods.
On July 11, Japanese Chancellor, Takeshi Iweaya, met with the Secretary of State Framed Rubio, during the Meeting of Foreign Ministers of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN).
Japan was the fifth most important commercial partner for the US in 2024, representing 4.3% of all trade and more than 148,000 million dollars in imports from the Asian country, according to government data.
