The Donald Trump Administration canceled the flights of some 10,000 refugees who had already received approval to move to the United States after a process that could last years, according to a State Department memo to which CNN had access.
Approximately 10,000 refugees in different parts of the world have been stranded, according to a source cited by the network.
On Monday, Trump signed an executive order that deemed the US refugee admissions program “detrimental to the interests” of the country and ordered its suspension effective January 27. However, the deadlines appear to have been moved forward, although it is not clear what prompted the change.
According to the memo obtained by CNN, the agency in charge of processing and arriving refugees informed those affected and the actors involved in the resettlement that the program had been suspended until further notice.
“All previously scheduled refugee trips to the United States are being canceled, and no new reservations will be made. Resettlement Support Centers (RSC) should not request travel for new refugee cases at this time,” the document states.

Among those affected are more than 1,600 Afghan refugees who had received approval to seek asylum in the United States.

On that occasion, chaos occurred within the US, with multiple people detained at airports after landing, while others were prevented from boarding flights abroad.
This time, Trump’s order has directly prevented refugees from boarding planes, avoiding images of chaos on American soil.
