The president-elect of the United States, Donald Trump, announced this Tuesday the election of Ronald Douglas “Ron” Johnson, his former ambassador in El Salvador, as ambassador to Mexico, an important diplomatic position given his campaign promises on immigration and drug trafficking.

“During my first term, Ron served as ambassador to El Salvador, where he worked tirelessly with Salvadoran authorities and our team to reduce violent crime and illegal migration to the lowest levels in history,” Trump said on his Truth Social network. .

Trump announced that Johnson will collaborate with his candidate for Secretary of State, Marco Rubio, to promote the “security and prosperity” of the United States and promised to “end migrant crime” and “stop the flow of dangerous drugs” from Mexico to his country.

Regarding his credentials, he added that Johnson has a degree in Strategic Intelligence and has 20 years of experience in the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA), after his time in the US Army, where he was a special forces soldier, or “beret.” green”.

Trump has adopted a belligerent tone with Mexico since his campaign, with mass deportations as one of his slogans, and has even threatened to impose tariffs on Mexican products if his government does not put a stop to the immigration and drug trafficking of which he considers him a facilitator. .

The position of ambassador to Mexico, which must be confirmed by the Senate, joins other diplomatic candidacies announced by Trump this afternoon ahead of his new Republican administration that begins on January 20, 2025.
