The president of the United States, Donald Trump, this Thursday lowered the classification of cannabis to introduce it into a less restrictive category of drugs in order to facilitate research with this substance, which, the president clarified, will continue to be illegal at the Federal level with regard to its recreational use.
“I want to emphasize that the (executive) order that I am about to sign does not legalize marijuana in any way, in any sense, and in no way authorizes its use as a recreational drug,” Trump said at the event to sign the order at the White House.
The initiative signed today removes marijuana from category I of narcotics, the same classification as heroin, to category III of drugs, which has, for example, ketamine.
The order signed by Trump also calls for the creation of a pilot program to reimburse patients of the Medicare health program for the purchase of products made with CBD, a cannabis compound that does not have psychoactive properties.
At the event held in the Oval Office, Trump was accompanied by oncology professionals, cancer patients and representatives of the pharmacy association.
Recreational cannabis use is legal in the US in 24 states and Washington DC, but not at the federal level.
