WASHINGTON.- President Donald Trump signed an executive order that gives greater authority to the Magnate Elon Musk as leader of the Government Efficiency Department (Doge) to supervise more closely the expense of federal agencies.
The measure, in practice, expands the power of Musk to intervene in the public administration through his work in Doge and forces the agencies to collaborate with him.
Specifically, the text instructs the agencies to collaborate with the Doge team to review contracts and subsidies, with the aim of reducing, modifying or even canceling them, according to the text of the order.
The process to modify or cancel contracts already in force will begin “immediately” and priority will be given to those linked to “educational institutions and foreign entities in cases of waste, fraud and abuse,” according to the order.

Likewise, agencies are required to establish a system to “register each payment” related to contracts and subsidies, in addition to providing a “brief written justification” for each one, something that is already a common practice in several departments.
The executive order occurs after the first Trump cabinet meeting, in which Musk, despite not being a member, had an outstanding role exposing his efforts in Doge to reduce the bureaucracy and combat what he described as “fraud”, although he did not provide evidence in this regard.
The order further increases the power that Musk has acquired within the administration, which has raised the rejection of public employees, unions and the Democratic opposition, who denounce control of the magnate about the activities and lack of transparency.
Until now, Musk has made drastic decisions, such as the dismantling of the International Development Agency (USAID), the freezing of humanitarian aid in the United States and the offer of compensation to public employees to encourage their resignation, under the threat of forced layoffs for those who will not accept them.
