The United States National Security Department announced on Friday the unilateral rupture of the collective agreement with the union that represents almost 50,000 airport security agents.

“Eliminating collective bargaining also eliminates bureaucratic obstacles that will improve productivity and reduce waiting times in airport security,” the Department of National Security (DHS in English) said in a statement.

The agents covered by the Agreement – which the DHS now ignores – belong to the transportation administration in transport (TSA), responsible for guaranteeing security at airports through the inspection of passengers and luggage.

“In 86% of the airports, the TSA has more agents working full for the union than performing control tasks,” said the DHS to justify its decision.

In addition, the DHS said that thanks to the decision taken by the secretary, Kristi Noem, the agents “will no longer lose their dollars hard earned in a union that does not represent them.”

The American Government Employees Federation (EGE, in English), the union that groups these workers, replied that the decision represents a “violation of workers’ law” by the Donald Trump government.

“Our union has been to the front challenging the illegal actions of this administration against federal workers, both in legal courts and in the court of public opinion. Now, our TSA officers are paying the price with this clearly retaliatory action, ”said the Afge.

The group also assured that the data given about liberated workers is “a completely manufactured statement.”

The union and the TSA signed this collective agreement last year, which was going to be in force until 2031.

The then administrator of the TSA, David Pekoske, said the day of the firm that the agency would not have a future without the agreement: “If we did not have this CBA, if we did not have this salary package, I would tell them that we probably would not have a TSA in five or ten years.”
