Washington, (EFE) .- President Donald Trump threatened Canada with imposing a 35% tariff from August 1, and advanced that he could consider an adjustment if the country helps him stop the flow of fentanyl that enters EU or eliminates his barriers.

In a letter similar to those that the Republican leader began sending some commercial partners this week with the new figure that will apply from next month, Trump warned Prime Minister Mark Carney that if his country raises the tariffs against EU, the figure established by Canada will be added to the announced 35%.

According to his note, Fentanyl traffic is not the only challenge that Washington faces with his neighboring country. Its tariff and non -tariff policies, in their opinion, cause unsustainable commercial deficits for the United States, which represent a “great threat” both for their economy and their national security.

Trump recalled that he imposed tariffs on Canada initially precisely to address the “crisis” that this drug causes in the United States, and that partly attributed to Ottawa’s “failure” when it comes to stopping it.

“Instead of working with the United States, Canada responded with its own tariffs,” he criticized in that letter, where he remembers that tariffs are not contemplated to those companies that decide to cross the border and settle in US territory.

The letter added that if Canada collaborates when it comes to stopping the passage of that drug through the Washington border, it will consider “perhaps” an adjustment to the announced figure, which could be modified “upwards or the decline” depending on the relationship with the country.

“There will be no tariff if Canada, or the companies in their country, decide to build or manufacture products within the United States and, in fact, we will do everything possible to grant approvals quickly, professional and routinely,” adds Trump’s letter.

Trump has promised to continue with these letters of tariff threats until each commercial partner reaches a bilateral commercial agreement, after announcing on April 2 an additional global tariff of 10% and another superior for countries with high commercial deficit of goods in their favor, something that labeled as “reciprocal” without being.

On April 9, date on which these “reciprocal” tariffs entered into force, Washington announced a truce that expired this Wednesday and was extended to August.

Trump and Carney had set out to achieve a resolution to bilateral commercial negotiations to avoid a new round of tariff reprisals, after the so -called ‘Liberation Day’, on April 2, the American did not leave his neighbor out of the list of taxes.

Among those who have received similar letters this week are Japan, South Korea, Burma, Laos, Cambodia, Thailand, Serbia, Bangladesh, Indonesia, South Africa, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Tunisia, Kazakhstan and Malaysia. In the case of Brazil, 50%tariffs were justified in retaliation for the trial of former president Jair Bolsonaro.
