The president of the United States, Donald Trump, plans to introduce a new application rate of $ 100,000 for H-1B work visas, according to a White House official, in an effort to reduce its use as part of its broader offensive against immigration.

The Republican President was expected to sign a proclamation on Friday restricting the entrance under the H-1B Visas program unless the application rate is paid, said the official. Trump also planned to order changes in prevailing salary levels for the H-1B program as a way of limiting its use.

The H-1B program has become critical for technology and personnel selection companies that depend on foreign workers to cover a variety of technical roles.

Amazon had more than 10,000 H-1B visas approved in 2025, while Microsoft and Meta Platforms had more than 5,000 H-1B visas approved each, according to the United States citizenship and immigration services.

Bloomberg News previously reported on Trump’s intention to sign the order related to H-1B visa applications.

Cognizant Technology Solutions Corp shares, a computer services company that depends largely on H-1B visa holders, fell more than 5% on Friday.

The detractors of the visas, among which are many American technological workers, argue that companies use workers with H-1B visas to suppress wages and ignore Americans for jobs for which, otherwise, they could be qualified.

India was the largest beneficiary of H-1B visas last year, with 71% of the approved beneficiaries, while China held a second place, with 11.7%, according to government data.

The H-1B visa program is reserved for people used in specialized professions, often in the field of technology. They can be computer engineers, technological programs directors and other information technologies professionals. H-1B visas are approved for a period of three to six years.
