The president of the United States, Donald Trump, signed on Thursday a decree to apply lower tariffs to imports of Japanese cars and other products that were announced in July.

The reduction of tariffs on cars will enter into force seven days after the publication of the decree. Part of the tariff relief will be retroactive as of August 7, 2025.

The decree also means that a reduced tariff rate of the United States on Japanese cars, from 27.5 % to 15 %, will enter into force at the end of this month, Reuters said previously, citing a source from the Japanese government.

Trump’s encumbrances to world shipments, which entered into force in August, have hit Japanese car manufacturers hard. Last month, Toyota said he was waiting for an impact of almost $ 10,000 million for the measure.

“The United States will apply a basic 15 % tariff to almost all Japanese imports together with a separate specific sectoral treatment for cars and car parts; aerospace products; generic pharmaceutical products and natural resources that are not naturally available or produced in the United States,” says the decree.

Japan has said that the commercial agreement ensures that the fifth largest commercial partner of the United States will always receive the lowest tariff rate in chips and pharmaceutical products of all the pacts negotiated by Washington. It also includes the non -imposition of tariffs on commercial airplanes and their pieces.

The decree is expected to include provisions so that the tax of 15 % agreed in July does not apply to Japanese imports subject to higher tariffs, while the articles previously subject to tariffs below 15 % will be adjusted to that rate, the source said.
