The president of the United States, Donald Trump, set on Monday a new term of 10 or 12 days for Russia to advance towards the end of the war in Ukraine or face the consequences, which shows frustration with the Russian president, Vladimir Putin, due to the conflict that lasts three and a half years.
Trump threatened to sanctions both Russia and buyers of their exports if progress is not achieved. The new term suggests that the US president is willing to comply with those threats after his previous doubts.
In Scotland, where it meets with European leaders and plays golf, Trump was disappointed with Putin and for having shortened the 50 -day period he had established on the subject at the beginning of the month.
“I will set a new term of about 10 or 12 days as of today,” Trump told the press during a meeting with British Prime Minister Keir Starmer. “There is no reason to wait … we just don’t see any progress.”
Ukraine received the statement. Andriy Yermak, chief of staff of President Volodimir Zelenski, thanked Trump in a publication on social networks for “standing firm and transmitting a clear message of peace through force.”
Trump, who also expressed his discomfort with Zelenski, did not always follow the harsh words about Putin with actions, citing what he considers a good relationship that both have maintained previously.

This Monday, Trump said he was not interested in more conversations with Putin. He said that sanctions and tariffs would be used as punishment for Moscow if he did not meet his demands.
“There is no reason to wait. If we know what the answer will be, why wait? And they would be sanctions and perhaps tariffs, secondary tariffs,” Trump said. “I don’t want to do that to Russia. I love the Russian people.”
Ukraine had proposed a summit between Putin and Zelenski before the end of August, but the Kremlin said that this deadline was unlikely and that a meeting could only be taken as a final step to reach peace. The Russian Foreign Ministry declared on Saturday that if the West wanted a true peace with Ukraine, it would stop supplying weapons to kyiv.
Trump repeatedly expressed his exasperation with Putin for continuing with attacks against Ukraine despite the United States’s efforts to end war. Trump highlighted the successes in other parts of the world where the United States helped negotiate peace agreements and felt flattered by some leaders who suggest that he should receive the Nobel Peace Prize.
“I am disappointed with President Putin,” Trump said Monday. “I’m going to reduce the 50 days I gave him because I think I know what will happen.”
Trump, who also struggles to achieve a peace agreement in Gaza, highlighted his role in resolving conflicts between India and Pakistan, as well as between Rwanda and Congo. Before returning to the White House in January, Trump promised during his campaign to put an end to Russia’s conflict with Ukraine in one day.
“We thought we had solved it many times, and then President Putin goes out and begins to launch rockets against a city like kyiv and kills many people in an elderly residence or anywhere,” Trump said. “And I say that is not the way to do it.”
