The president of the United States, Donald Trump, told him on Wednesday during a call to the Prime Minister of Canada, Justin Trudeau, who has not done “enough” to stop the traffic of fentanyl and, therefore, avoid the imposition of tariffs.
“Justin Trudeau, from Canada, called me to ask me what could be done with the tariffs. I told him that many people have died because of the fentanyl that arrives through the borders of Canada and Mexico, and nothing has convinced me that he has stopped, ”said the republican leader in his social Truth network.
“He said the situation has improved, but I said: that is not enough,” Trump added.
According to the US president, “the call concluded somewhat friendly,” although he also took advantage of his message to accuse Trudeau to use the issue of tariffs to “remain in power.”
Trump issued that accusation because, he said, Canadian Prime Minister “was unable” to tell him when the next elections will be in Canada.
On March 9, the ruling Liberal Party will choose his new leader to replace Trudeu, who announced that he will leave office after nine years in power following the tariff crisis with the United States.
In another message in Truth Social, Trump called Trudeau as “governor”, the way in which he refers to the prime minister since he revealed his intention to annex Canada as state number 51 of the United States.
In that publication, he said that the “weak border policies” of Trudeau “are responsible for the deaths of many people” in the United States.
Trump opened on Tuesday a commercial war with its main commercial partners by imposing 25 % tariffs on Mexico and Canada, and additional 10 % tariffs on China, for the Fentanyl flow, reprisals that these countries will respond with similar measures.
Trudeau and Trump speak for 50 minutes in the midst of the commercial war launched by the US
Trudeau, and the president of the United States, Donald Trump, held on Wednesday a 50 -minute telephone conversation, sources from the Canadian government told Efe.
In the conversation, Trudeau and Trump treated the commercial war caused by the imposition of tariffs by the United States as well as Canadian efforts to limit the flow of fentanyl to the United States.
The same sources pointed to Efe that the American vice president, JD Vance, and the United States Secretary of Commerce, Howard Lutnick were also present in the conversation.
Trudeau also intends to speak with the president of Mexico, Claudia Sheinbaum, in the next few hours, explained Canadian government sources.
The contacts between the leaders of the US, Canada and Mexico are produced one day after Trump imposed 25% tariffs on Canadian and Mexican products despite the fact that the three countries are in force of the TMEC free trade agreement.
