President-elect Donald Trump will declare a national emergency on the U.S. southern border with Mexico on Monday and announce plans to send more military forces to help secure the border, a senior administration official said.

The official, who briefed reporters on condition of anonymity before Trump’s inauguration, said the president would also add criminal cartels to the terrorist lists.

On the other hand, Mexico rejected Trump’s “unilateral measure” of reimposing the “Remain in Mexico” or MPP program after his inauguration, which forces US asylum seekers to remain south of the border.

“The indication that the president (Claudia Sheinbaum) has given us is to emphasize that this is a unilateral decision that they make, yes they can do it, (but) we do not necessarily share it, in fact, we do not share it,” declared the chancellor. , Juan Ramón de la Fuente, at the daily Government conference.

Trump will have among his first decrees ‘close’ the border with Mexico

Trump will dedicate his first executive orders to “close” the border with Mexico with the deployment of the military and will restore the controversial ‘Stay in Mexico’ program, according to his team in a call with journalists, hours before Trump’s inauguration.

This program, known as Migrant Protection Protocols (MPP), came into effect in January 2019 under Trump’s first term (2017-2021) and continued in the first months of Joe Biden’s Administration, until it was removed in August 2022.
