The nominee of the president of the United States, Donald Trump, to direct NASA, Jared Isaacman, said Wednesday that if he is confirmed for the position he will “prioritize” the missions to Mars to those of the Moon.
“We will give priority to the sending of American astronauts to Mars. On the way, we will inevitably have the ability to return to the moon,” said the candidate during an audience in the Senate prior to the ratification of Congress for the position.
With these statements, Isaacman distances himself from the objective of the previous administration of Joe Biden (2021-2025), whose goal was the return of the human to the moon by 2027, and aligns with the interests of the magnate Elon Musk, head of Spacex, who aspires to take the human being to Mars.
“The Americans have been asking the moon to return on the way to get to Mars since 1989 and more than 100 million have been spent without seeing the planned results,” explained the nominated.
However, asked by Senator Ted Cruz, Isaacman said that “no doubt” it would be possible to simultaneously launch a mission to Mars and another to the moon.
He also addressed the space race that the United States and China freed, warning that “it is imperative” for the American power, never “secondly.”
Isaacman, 42, is the founder of Draken International, an American company that offers air services to the military and defense industry, and the SHIFT4 Payments payment processor, of which he is also the executive director. According to Forbes magazine, it has a heritage of 1.3 billion dollars.
In addition, the entrepreneur became last September the first astronaut to complete a private space walk after leaving the Space X Dragon capsule, located 700 kilometers from the Earth.
He was the commander of the first Polaris Dawn mission, of the Musk Aerospace Manufacturing Company, CEO of Spacex.
A few weeks ago, NASA gave Spacex an extension of its launch services contract to include the huge Starship rocket, in addition to the services that already existed.
Musk, who has shown to have a great influence on the second administration of Donald Trump, has described the Moon’s missions to the moon as “a distraction” and is committed to “building a self -sufficient colony on Mars.”
