The tweets of an X account that seems to belong to the newly chosen leader of the Catholic Church, Robert Francis Prevost, resurfaced and were widely shared on social networks this Thursday, showing him critical of President Donald Trump and his policy on multiple occasions in recent years, which suggests a political position of leftist tendency.

Key data

In the most recent tweet to an account belonging to “Robert Prevost”, the Catholic writer Rocco Palmo criticized Trump for refusing to return Kilmar Abrego García to the United States after he was unfairly deported to El Salvador in March.

The account also recently published an article by the National Catholic Reporter that questions the interpretation of vice president JD Vance that the Bible suggests a hierarchy about whom a person chooses to love: “JD Vance is wrong,” wrote the Premost account.

Other tweets criticized Trump’s policies and immigration rhetoric, including a publication that denounced Trump use of the phrase “Bad Men” to refer to undocumented immigrants who commit crimes.

The tweets in the account condemned Trump for their 2017 Muslim prohibition and their policy of separating children from their undocumented parents.

Tangent

Trump congratulated Leo XIV in Truth Social on Thursday, writing that it is “a great honor” to be the first American Pope. “I hope to meet Pope Leo XIV. It will be a very significant moment!” Trump wrote. Trump received criticism after the death of Pope Francis by publishing an image created by artificial intelligence that showed him dressed as the Pope. Trump, who attended Francisco’s funeral, described the image as a joke. Vance was one of the last people to meet with Francisco, less than 24 hours before his death on April 21.
