Ukraine accepted on Tuesday an US proposal to declare between kyiv and Moscow a high total and extendable fire of 30 days in land, sea and air, on which the Russian president, Vladimir Putin, must now pronounce.
“Ukraine expressed his willingness to accept the US proposal to declare the immediate fire of 30 days that can be extended with the mutual agreement of the parties and that is subject to the acceptance and consequent implementation by the Russian Federation,” reads the joint declaration signed by the delegations of Washington and kyiv who reached the agreement in a meeting held in Saudi Arabia.
The text adds that “Russian reciprocity is key to achieving peace”, in reference to the need for Moscow to now accept the US proposal to lower arms for a month to start negotiating the end of the war.
The president of the United States, Donald Trump, expressed shortly after the hope that Putin accepts the proposal.
“The most important thing is that Ukraine has just accepted the fire. Now we have to go to Russia and wait for President Putin to accept it. And so we can start this, ”Trump said in statements to the press at the White House.
“I hope they say yes and, if they do, I think we will have advanced a lot. If they say no, then we will know, unfortunately, what is the impediment to peace here, ”said US Secretary of State, Marco Rubio, in a press conference in Riad.
These statements imply a change in tone with respect to the last days, in which Ukraine has accused of putting obstacles to peace from the White House while the willingness to stop the conflict.
Zelenski Pide convince Putin
From the kyiv presidential palace and in a video speech to the nation, the Ukrainian president, Volodimir Zelenski, celebrated the commitment achieved with EU for his emissaries and confirmed that Ukraine will end the hostilities immediately if Russia agrees to do the same.
The Ukrainian President added that EU “must convince Russia” so that the high fire can enter into force as soon as possible. “Ukraine is ready for peace. Russia must show its willingness to end the war or continue with it. It is the time of truth, ”Zelenski riveted.
Another measure that Ukraine and the US proposes to the Kremlin is liberation, during the thirty days of truce, of the prisoners of war of both sides and the return of the civilians arrested and of the Ukrainian minors deported by Russia of the territories occupied in Ukraine.
Washington will send weapons again
The success of the meeting held by the delegations of Ukraine and the US in the Saudi city of Yeda has also led to Washington to commit to resume armament supplies and intelligence information to Ukraine, after it interrupted them to press kyiv to accept a high immediate fire that allows direct negotiations to begin with Russia.
In addition, both kyiv and Washington have shown their full willingness to sign as soon as possible the document proposed by the US to exploit Ukrainian mineral resources so that EU can recover the expense in which it has incurred to support kyiv and that Ukraine receives investments and security guarantees for the presence of US companies in their territory.
One of the first leaders to react to the news that came out of Yeda has been the Polish Prime Minister, Donald Tusk, who has described the understanding achieved between Washington and kyiv of “important step towards peace” and added that “Europe is willing to reach a fair and lasting peace.”
Although the concrete role that Europe can represent is not mentioned in the joint statement signed by Ukrainians and Americans, the document does reflect that Ukraine requested at the meeting that Europeans be included in the peace process that can be opened with Russia.
