The Office in Mexico of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights regretted this Monday the murder of Alejandro Arcos Catalán, mayor of Chilpancingo, who had taken office for just a week and was murdered on Sunday.
“We regret the murder of Mayor Alejandro Arcos of Chilpancingo, Guerrero, and his government secretary recently. “We join the call for a prompt and effective investigation into these tragic events, which reflect the need to strengthen institutions,” the organization said in a statement.
“Protecting the integrity of those who exercise public functions is essential to preserving democracy. “We express our solidarity with their families and reiterate our commitment to strengthening the rule of law and the defense of Human Rights,” he added.
This Monday, Arcos Catalán’s funeral was held in the Church of Santa Cruz in Chilpancingo and he was later buried, and outside the funeral hundreds of citizens demonstrated to demand justice for the politician’s murder.

The protests occurred just hours after authorities found the decapitated body of Arcos Catalán in Chilpancingo.
Ministerial authorities indicated that on Sunday afternoon neighbors reported to the authorities a human head on the awning of a vehicle, which belonged to Arcos Catalán.
The agents also indicated that the body of the mayor, who had protested to the position last Monday, September 30, was inside the vehicle in the passenger seat.
Days before, the general secretary of the Government of Arcos, Francisco Tapia, was also murdered.
This Monday, during her morning press conference, President Claudia Sheinbaum assured that her government is carrying out the necessary investigations to clarify the mayor’s crime.
After taking office, Arcos Catalán assured that his main commitment was to “guarantee peace and security in the municipality” and that he would fulfill this “hand in hand with the Mexican Army.”
Criminal violence in Guerrero, in the capital Chilpancingo and several municipalities has been increasing in recent years with constant fierce disputes between organized crime groups for territorial control for the transfer of drugs, extortion and other crimes.
