Some security measures taken by the French authorities to deal with terrorist threats during the Olympic Games of Paris 2024 were “unnecessary and disproportionate”, and others were revealed discriminatory or even illegal, said United Nations experts on Tuesday.

In a joint statement, three UN Human Rights Rapporteurs stressed that in many cases “security measures were applied indiscriminately or excessively generalized, something that was not provided when dealing with potential risks.”

The experts recalled in this regard that the French authorities began 1.2 million administrative investigations as part of the security measures for the games, which resulted in restrictions for some 4,000 people when accessing certain areas of the French capital.

In addition, individual control and surveillance measures were imposed on 559 people, 848 housing records were carried out, and an unprecedented security device was deployed that included drones and the use of artificial intelligence with video technology.

“There was also a significant increase in the orders of expulsion from France and 20 people were dispossessed of French nationality,” the UN rates for anti -terrorist struggle (Ben Saul), freedom of meeting (Gina Romero) and cultural rights (Alexandra Xantakhi) recalled in the statement (Alexandra Xantakhi).

According to the signatories, it was revealed that many of these measures violated the French law, as evidenced by the cancellation of some of them by the courts, while others did not comply with the judicial safeguards or due process.

“There were also discriminatory policies patterns, pointing against individuals or groups due to their political opinions, religious affiliation or ethnicity,” said the three experts.

Saul, Romero and Xanthaki urged the French authorities to carry out an impartial review of the security measures taken last year, so that “both France and other countries lote lessons on how to guarantee the safety of future mass events.”
