The Spanish representative before the UN, Héctor Gómez, who is a co -confacilitator in the process for artificial intelligence (AI) that implies all member countries, is confident that the president of the US, Donald Trump, maintains in this concertation to his country, which is the hegemonic leader of the sector.
“Right now we are optimistic about the contacts previously made” to Trump’s possession, Gomez explained in statements to the press in Paris, where he participates in the summit about the organized AI at the initiative of the French president, Emmanuel Macron.
Gomez recalled that the United States, like the other 192 UN countries, “have the obligation” to work in the process, “to see the documents” and the first document on which the discussions will be carried out.
Insistently asked about the signs of unilateralism of the new US president and his withdrawal from different international instances, the Spanish representative, who acts as a cofacilitator along with his counterpart from Costa Rica, acknowledged that “we cannot get ahead of scenarios that we do not know if they leave to give or not. ”
He explained that at the moment it is in a phase that consists of “structuring this process” and insisted that “you have to be patients and prudent” because the Trump administration is taking its first steps.
The new representative before the UN has not yet presented their credentials and in that context the facilitators cannot manifest, waiting to know their position, Gomez explained.

In any case, he stressed the importance of achieving “broad consensus and a unit” in the development of AI.

Gómez said that the first round of contacts with the Member States “has been very positive” and that all of them’s proposals are currently being collected.
The objective that has been set is to achieve “a broad agreement” of the countries in which the public sector and the private initiative are involved to launch a scientific panel of experts in AI that feels the foundations of a governance that covers All areas affected by this technology.
