The Ministry of Economy (SE) assured that the United States is closing its trade with the world, especially with China, but gives preferential treatment to Canada and Mexico, even respecting its agreement signed with both nations.

“There is certainty in what is happening and clarity that the United States is going to close itself to the rest of the world, giving a preferential role to Canada and Mexico, respecting the trade agreement,” declared Luis Rosendo Gutiérrez, undersecretary of Foreign Trade.

“The United States is not passing with the other 14 trade agreements it has with the world, so Mexico and Canada come out with great advantages,” he said during the Industrialists’ Day, organized by Concamin.

According to the official, the United States will seek a regional policy with Canada and Mexico, and the USMCA is one of the pillars of the Mexican economy and North America.

“Today our circumstance is not only to talk about the USMCA, but about the economic restructuring experienced by the world. From today on, Mexico’s role is leading and positive and economically full of opportunities in the midst of the entire trade conflict between the United States,” he noted.

“We bring many challenges in the automotive industry, truck manufacturing, steel and aluminum, but there is certainty and certainty about what the United States is doing with its trade,” he indicated.

“Currently there are many issues to address and we will continue to review them in terms of trade between the Mexican and US economies, but industrialists have a great task to carry out in the coming months, which focuses on gaining market share in the United States,” he highlighted.

He added that Mexico’s relative and comparative disadvantages compared to other countries put it in a particular dimension of gaining market in the United States.

“Although we lose in certain sectors, what we are trying to do is compensate and overcome where we were with certain sectors that pass zero tariffs to the United States,” he said.

“Today all exports from Japan and South Korea go to the United States paying a tariff of 15 percent, while products purchased in China and sent to the United States are at a rate of 56 percent,” he said.

“Mexico has the advantage that 85 percent of what we are exporting is not paying tariffs, so it is necessary to participate and deepen trade in sectors such as electronics,” he declared.
