Both the American business sector in Mexico and the Mexican government considered on Wednesday the imposition of tariffs by the United States, despite the threats launched by the president, Donald Trump, in his return to the White House.
This was stated by Larry Rubin, president of the American Society (AMSOC) Mexico, and the Secretary of Economy, Marcelo Ebrard, highlighting the solidity of bilateral trade and the opportunities that open for both nations such as the North American block.
“We believe that the first of February will be any Saturday, that there will be no tariffs and that the commercial relationship will flow as it has been flowing to this day,” Rubin said during the 85 general assembly of the AMSOC Mexico, which He groups American businessmen with businesses in Mexico.
Rubin said that although Trump has shown a willingness to use tariffs as a global pressure tool, as has recently been seen in his relationship with Colombia, the reality is that applying them against Mexico would generate an inflationary impact on the United States.
“We are confident both of the US entrepreneurs in Mexico, as well as the American civil society in which the commercial relationship and collaboration will continue to be given (…) USA is intertwined with Mexico and no other country. The trade of our two nations is huge, ”he said.
Although Ebrard has not specified what the strategy or sectors will be that they can address with a similar measure, the Mexican president, Claudia Sheinbaum has advanced that Mexico can respond with tariffs to the United States.
In addition, the official said that, in the first Trump administration (2017-2021) the negotiations to reach the signing of the treaty between Mexico, the United States and Canada (TMEC) were more complicated, while also attempted to put tariffs.
“We will be prepared for any scenario that occurs. We are ready. I was more difficult a few years ago and I don’t see why we are not going to get ahead. Courage, ”said Ebrard, in statements with journalists after the event.
He also defended that the TMEC has been “a resounding success”, with a growth and investment of 37% since its implementation.
Regarding its review, scheduled for 2026, the secretary has indicated that Mexico has already begun consultations with strategic sectors to ensure that the process runs without setbacks.
According to Rubin, trade between Mexico and the US is aimed at exceeding the trillion of dollars per year and remains an essential element of stability for both economies.
The Ebrard Secretary highlighted the relevance of key sectors such as the automotive industry, semiconductors and pharmaceutical, which have made Mexico an indispensable partner for the United States.
In addition, he stressed that the nearshoring Or the relocation of industries from Asia to North America, it is an opportunity that will benefit Mexico in the coming years.
Although trade is crucial, both Rubin and Ebrard agreed that the new US administration has other priorities in its bilateral agenda, such as the fight against drug trafficking and control of irregular migration.
“Trump is clear that the first thing is migration and security, then the trade comes,” said Rubin, who has assured that the Mexican government is aligned in these issues with Washington.
