Mexico City.- The American Society of Mexico (AMSOC), which groups American businessmen in Mexico, made an urgent call to the Government of Claudia Sheinbaum to strengthen dialogue and coordination with the United States, after the entry into force of 25 % tariffs on Mexican products, given the “significant impact” on the economy.

“We make an urgent call to strengthen dialogue and coordination between the two countries, because these measures could generate a significant impact on the regional economy and affect commercial dynamism between the two nations,” the agency said in a statement.

The AMSOC recognized the work that the Mexican government has done to address drug trafficking and irregular immigration, conditions that US President Donald Trump had put to avoid tariffs, however, he said it is necessary to “reinforce the joint work to address these challenges”.

“The commitment to joint solutions in security and migration must be the basis on which dialogue and bilateral cooperation are reinforced, in order to avoid measures that can derive in a commercial war, which would not benefit any of the two nations,” said Larry Rubin, president of the AMSOC.

He stressed that bilateral collaboration remains essential to effectively face drug trafficking and stressed that because the leadership of organized crime is mainly concentrated in Mexico, it is “essential” a coordinated effort to eradicate the problem from its origin.

Rubin recalled that American consumers would be the most affected, since companies would transfer the cost of tariffs to the final prices of products.

In addition to this, the AMSOC warned that these measures complicate the environment for the next revision of the treaty between Mexico, the United States and Canada (TMEC), scheduled for 2026, which has been key to the competitiveness of the region.

“In this sense, we underline the importance of maintaining a proactive and collaborative approach to avoid setbacks that harm the economic well -being of both nations,” he emphasized.

This Tuesday, 25 % tariffs entered into force to Mexico and Canada, after which President Sheinbaum said she will announce tariff and non -tariff measures against the United States on the next Sunday, March 9, although she said she plans a call with Trump this Thursday to seek the suspension of these measures.

Tariffs especially concern Mexico for being the largest commercial partner in the United States, with a value of exports to that country of 490,000 million dollars in 2023, almost 30 % of the Mexican gross domestic product (GDP), according to a report by the Mexican Institute of Competitiveness (IMCO).
