The United States Secretary of State, Marco Rubio, launched on Wednesday a call to eradicate biological weapons in the world, on the occasion of the 50th anniversary of the entry into force of the Biological Weapons Convention (CAB).

“Today, we seek to collaborate with all responsible nations to address the threat of biological weapons and ultimately, achieve a completely free world of this scourge,” said the head of US diplomacy in a statement.

Rubio urged the more than 180 states of the Convention to “redouble their national, bilateral and multilateral efforts to prohibit and prevent the development, acquisition and use of biological weapons.”

“When commemorating the 50 years of the CAB, the United States undertakes to be at the forefront of world efforts to eliminate biological weapons from the world once and for all,” he said.

The Secretary of State said that the United States unilaterally resigned from biological weapons in 1969, even before the CAB was negotiated and that during the last 50 years it has remained “firm” in the defense of said convention.

The CAB was adopted by the United Nations General Assembly in 1971 and entered into force in 1975.

This prohibits countries from developing, storing or acquiring biological weapons and forces to destroy or reconvert any related arsenal.
