The United States government will probably dispense with about 300,000 workers this year, said its new Human Resources Chief, which would be equivalent to a 12.5% decrease in the Federal Work Force since January.

The director of the Personnel Management Office (OPM), Scott Kupor, said that 80% of those workers would voluntarily go and only 20% would be fired.

That figure is equivalent to almost twice the 154,000 workers who, according to Reuters, had accepted voluntary compensation last month.

When assuming the position in January, President Donald Trump launched a massive campaign to reduce the federal civil work force of 2.4 million people, which he is swollen and inefficient.

“I can’t force people to say goodbye,” Kupor said in an interview in Washington on Thursday, adding that he would have to persuade the cabinet secretaries to accept their vision of government efficiency.

The comments contrast with the first months of Trump’s second mandate, when the OPM address explicitly ordered the agencies that dismissed new employees in their functions, according to a judicial presentation.

The agencies will present proposals on future cuts to the Budget Director of the White House, Russ Vought, while the president prepares his next budget request to Congress, said Kupor, who added that he met with the Budget Office on Wednesday.
