The United States Senate confirmed Ronald Johnson on Wednesday, an exagent of the CIA, as an ambassador to Mexico, in a context of bilateral tension for the tariffs of President Donald Trump and the rumors that he could send troops to the Latin American country to fight the drug cartels.

The Senate ratified Johnson, former ambassador to El Salvador during Trump’s first mandate, with 49 votes in favor and 46 against, and with only the necessary majority of those present to confirm it for the high profile diplomatic position.

The vote followed the line of the parties, with all the SiS from the Republicans and all the NOES of the Democrats and independent aligned.

In recent months, concern has increased among some Mexican officials that the United States can be preparing the land to take unilateral military actions within Mexico, an idea that Trump repeatedly raised in his presidential campaign.

The president has also made the reduction of immigration to the United States from Mexico a characteristic of his political career, including the contempt of Mexicans as criminals and blaming the Latin American country with the illegal drug entry to US territory.

More recently, tariffs have drastically increased to Mexican products imported to the United States, as part of a huge tariff program that has shaken world financial markets.
