The United States Federal Trade Commission (FTC) is considering presenting an investigation into anti-competitive practices in Microsoft’s cloud computing business, the financial newspaper Financial Times reported this Thursday.
In a further step in its goal of pursuing the monopolistic practices of Big Tech, Joe Biden’s government is examining accusations that Microsoft abuses its market power.
More specifically, the abuse of power in productivity software is being investigated by imposing punitive licensing terms to prevent customers from moving their data from its Azure cloud service to competing platforms, the newspaper notes, citing as a source “persons with direct knowledge of the matter.”

According to the newspaper, among the tactics it is examining are substantially increasing subscription fees for those who leave, charging high exit fees and making its Office 365 products incompatible with rival clouds.
The FTC has not yet formally requested documents or other information from Microsoft as part of the investigation.
The chair of the FTC, Lina Khan, has focused her mandate on aggressively curbing the monopolistic powers of companies like Meta and Amazon and on the near horizon is knowing whether whoever replaces her, when Donald Trump takes office in January, follows the same path .
