Valheim Officially Coming To Nintendo Switch 2

Valheim has been trucking along since 2021, when it hit PC in early access. Since then, it’s been expanded to Xbox platforms, and now it’s hitting something else entirely.

Announced during the latest Nintendo Direct, Valheim is slated for the Nintendo Switch 2 very soon.

Valheim Is Coming To Switch 2 In Summer 2026

A Surprise AnnouncementA viking in Valheim.

The survival genre took off some time ago, with games like Rust and ARC taking the world by storm. In 2021, Valheim joined the fray from Iron Gate Studio and Coffee Stain Publishing, where it’s remained a mainstay of the genre ever since.

If you’ve never played Valheim before, the description will give you an idea of what to expect: “A brutal exploration and survival game for 1-10 players, set in a procedurally-generated purgatory inspired by Viking culture. Battle, build, and conquer your way to a saga worthy of Odin’s patronage.”

In short, you’ll traverse this “brutal exploration” survival adventure solo or with nine other people. Construction is a big part of the game, Minecraft-style, as you’ll gather resources and build Viking architecture. “Gather, craft, survive” is the name of the game in Valheim.

Interested? Well, it’s coming to Nintendo Switch 2 this summer. While we don’t have an exact release date yet, we do have a window of “Summer 2026.” The Switch 2 exclusivity makes perfect sense, as the system can handle it far better than the previous generation. Nintendo’s second iteration of the console has made it clear that it can handle many multiplatform games better than its predecessor.

The Switch 2 edition will have the following features:

  • Touch screen menu support
  • HD Rumble
  • Gyroscope aiming

It’ll also sport “full cross-play between platforms,” which is a great sign, as the game is also coming to PS5. Full cross-play is pretty much all I need.

Valheim Is Still A Survival Mainstay

It’s Coming Along And Still Gets Updates

Since launch, Valheim has grown and received numerous updates (not bad for a team that started as a five-person group). In 2022, the Mistlands update arrived, which sported a new Mistlands biome, as well as a ton of quality-of-life updates that players still appreciate all these years later. With the launch of the Xbox edition came the Ashlands Update a bit later on.

On Steam, it still has “very positive” reviews, and fans are singing its praises years on, as one review writes: “Valheim is probably the best open-world-survival game that I’ve ever played. Even though the game is technically still not finished, it already offers so much content and you can easily spend 100 hours or way more , depending on your playstyle.”

For reference, the game is still in early access. Fascinatingly, the game is set to debut its 1.0 edition, post-early access, sometime in 2026, once the Deep North update hits. The Switch 2 edition of Valheim could coincide with that.
