Season 2 of Apple TV’s hit crime show won’t be what everyone’s expecting.
Vince Vaughn has confirmed that Bad Monkey season 2 is an “interim one,” despite the anticipated plans for another novel adaptation. Bad Monkey season 2 follows up on the events of season 1, which were pulled from the pages of Carl Hiassen’s novel of the same name. The novel has an official sequel, titled Razor Girl.
However, while speaking with Deadline about his upcoming movie Mike & Nick & Nick & Alice, Vaughn revealed Bad Monkey season 2 will not be based on Razor Girl. Instead, the upcoming season from Apple TV will be an “interim one, in between,” confirming an original story for the upcoming episodes. Said episodes have already begun filming in Florida.
Bad Monkey season 1 ended without any loose threads that could continue the story into a new chapter. This follows the same storytelling method as the book, which has no lead-in to Razor Girl. However, the series will be taking a different approach, with Vaughn confirming there will be an original story to bridge the two novels closer together.
However, the actor confirmed that, should season 2 succeed, “that would be the plan to do that” for season 3. He also confirmed that “David Dobkin, the director of Wedding Crashers, came in and did a bunch of episodes,” indicative of the seasoned crew put together to make the new installment a reality.
Now that Razor Girl is off the table, it’s unclear what the story of season 2 is going to be. This opens the door for a limitless number of possibilities, including the return of Bad Monkey characters who wouldn’t be expected to come back in the second book adaptation. A potentially broader story appears to be in order as the series progresses.
For now, though, it’s unclear just how far into production the show is, nor when it will be released. Series developer Bill Lawrence is also involved in creating the ongoing HBO series Rooster, as well as Ted Lasso season 4, which comes to Apple TV later this year. Depending on how spaced out his projects are, Vaughn’s return may not be for some time.
However, his update on the story of Bad Monkey season 2 means there’s going to be plenty of unique elements defining the next storyline. Just how directly it will bridge the gap from season 1 into Razor Girl‘s story is unclear. But it will likely prove another compelling, comedic case for Yancy to get involved in.
