The president of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, held this Sunday a “good call” with US President Donald Trump during which she transferred that time would be needed until July 9 “to reach a good agreement.”
“The EU and the United States (EU) share the most important and narrow commercial relationship in the world. Europe is willing to advance in conversations quickly and decision,” said Von der Leyen through social networks, adding that “to achieve a good agreement, we would need time until July 9”.
Since his arrival to power, Trump has adopted several tariff measures against his commercial partners, some of which have been suspended, including a 10 % base tariff applicable to all US commercial partners.
In the case of the EU, that 10 % tariff could reach 20 % once the current American pause expires on July 9.
However, last Friday the US president threatened to impose a direct 50 % tariff on the European Union as of June 1 because trade negotiations with the EU “are not being bound,” Trump said.
That same day, the European Commissioner of Commerce, Maros Sefcovic, held a telephone conversation with his American counterpart, Jamieson Greer, after which he said that the trade between the European Union and the EU must be governed by “mutual respect, not for threats” and reiterated the EU determination of defending their interests.
