Life is increasingly expensive, hence many people seek to change work to another where the salary is greater or choose to have a second source of income. Unfortunately this is the ideal scenario for scammers to operate.

The situation is complex in Mexico, but also in another countries; In 2024, the United States Federal Research Office (FBI) revealed that false job scams generated profits for 264 million dollars. Many of these fraud correspond to the so -called “tasks of tasks” in which the alleged work consists in carrying out simple activities, such as following creators of the Internet, I like their publications, commenting on them, sharing them, or, commenting on publications of products of electronic commerce giants, such as Amazon or Mercado Libre.

What are the scams of tasks and how to avoid falling into this fraud?

Task scams are a type of work fraud that uses gamification techniques, that is, game dynamics to motivate or manipulate behaviors and thus deceive victims. They work like this:

1. They contacted you through an unreasonable text message via WhatsApp, Telegram, SMS or through social networks

2. The scammer promises you a good remuneration in exchange for doing simple tasks, in general they do not give many details

3. The tasks include “like” online content or clicking several combinations of buttons in a false site or application. The site or application itself can even be a false version of a legitimate website

4. You can see the supposed earnings as you advance with the tasks

5. A time will come when the application or the scammer will ask you to “level up” your account or “unlock the profits” by entering money in the background

6. This is really the entire scam: once the payment is made, the money disappears and there will be no way to recover those false profits.

There are other ways in which cybercriminals try to seize your personal information and/or money:

False employment ads (sometimes in legitimate hiring sites) designed to get attention and present the candidacies. They look for personal data and can also request money for invented reasons, such as administration, training, police controls, among others.

What to do not be scammed in your job search?

  • Never respond to unplayed job offers. Legitimate recruiters will contact you through the right channels
  • If they call you after publishing your CV in an employment site, investigate the company or the recruiter and look for any online mention that may be related to scams
  • Remember that, if a job offer is too good to be true, it is probably
  • If there is no formal interview process, that is also a red flag
  • You never pay money in advance for a possible job. Legitimate recruiters will never ask for it
  • Never share your confidential personal or financial information with “recruiters” that get in touch through unofficial channels. They can love it to sell it to scammers or use it themselves to supplant your identity.
