Warning! Spoilers ahead for Marshals episode 1, “Piya Wiconi.”Kayce is back for Marshals, but Rip and Beth’s whereabouts are unknown in the Yellowstone spinoff. By the time Yellowstone ended in 2024 amid its continued popularity, the family suffered multiple deaths in its final few episodes. Firstly, the shocking exit of Kevin Costner forced the series to write out John III, and considering his commitment to the ranch, there was no other justified reason for his absence. Secondly, Beth finally achieved the revenge that she always wanted with the demise of Jamie.
That left only two surviving children for Costner’s character — Beth and Kayce. Both characters got their own version of happy ever after, following the return of the Yellowstone ranch to the Broken Rock Indian Reservation. Admittedly, Yellowstone didn’t really get to flesh out the siblings’ relationship until after the death of John III. That said, it’s still curious to know why Beth and Rip are nowhere to be found during Kayce’s new start in Marshals.
Rip & Beth Moved Away From The Yellowstone Ranch At The End Of The Flagship
The sale of Yellowstone ranch was the manifestation of the franchise’s long-standing promise about how it would return to its original inhabitants. As part of the agreement, Kayce, Monica, and Tate would keep East Camp, which remains the case in Marshals. Meanwhile, since the main house was going to be demolished, Beth and Rip bought a smaller ranch in Dillon, Montana, where they eventually moved to.
As described in the flagship, Dillon is about 40 miles west of the Bozeman area, where the events of the flagship took place and still around the same area where Kayce is based. This means that the couple and their adopted son, Carter, are far enough to have some separation, especially since they will soon be debuting their own spinoff, Dutton Ranch, Dutton Ranch but close enough that Taylor Sheridan and his team can stage a crossover.
Marshals Review: Kayce Redefines The Duttons’ Legacy In Yellowstone’s New Era
Kayce Dutton returns in Marshals, showing what the Yellowstone franchise look like through network TV’s most popular format — a police procedural.
Since Marshals episode 1, and likely the next several episodes, will be focused on establishing Kayce’s new life as part of the U.S. Marshals and Tate’s new beginning, there’s really no need for Rip and Beth to pop up at this point. While any kind of cameo is great, it’s so much better if there’s more to it than a form of fan-service.
Will Rip & Beth Ever Appear In Marshals?
As previously-mentioned, the logistics make it easier for Rip and Beth to appear in Marshals. At this point, it’s a matter of coming up with a reason to justify them taking the time of their day from establishing their own ranch and driving to East Camp. As seen in Yellowstone, the Dutton family likes to focus on their own affairs unless it’s absolutely necessary to meddle in each other’s business.
Dutton Ranch showrunner Chad Feehan addressed the possibility recently, and while he isn’t closing the door on the possibility, he also admits that both shows’ focus right now is to establish themselves. This means that instead of working on a crossover, they are prioritizing their respective storytelling first. Pragmatically, this is the right mindset, as it’s more important to find Marshals and Dutton Ranch’s identities first to come up with a better crossover.
