The White House defended Wednesday to have invoked the Law of Foreign Enemies, only used in war time, to deport a prison from El Salvador to alleged members of the Aragua Train (ADD), the transnational band born in the prisons of Venezuela, of which he said that “it has been sent by the hostile regime of Maduro.”

The White House spokeswoman, Karoline Leavitt, assured in a press conference that the use of that law of 1798, which allows arrests and summary expulsions in case of war or invasion of the territory, is justified because the Aragua train is carrying out a “predatory incursion” of the United States.

“It has been sent here by Maduro’s hostile regime in Venezuela and the president as soon as he assumed the position appointed TDA as terrorist organization, and under this law it is the president’s authority to deport these terrorists, or those who defend these terrorists, who have been sent to US soil,” said the spokesman.

Organizations such as Brennan Center For Justice have criticized the use of the Law of Foreign Enemies, which was not used since World War II, because it is designed for moments in which the country goes through a declared war conflict or an armed invasion of its territory by another country.

The White House and the President, Donald Trump, have insisted that the arrival of undocumented immigrants to the country is an invasion and that criminal gangs such as the Aragua train have plunged the country in “a period of war”, as the president said Sunday after invoking the law.

The Trump administration has justified with that law the shipment this weekend of more than 250 people on several flights to El Salvador and a jail within the Central American country without due process and without clarifying what crimes they have committed.
