Chicago, (EFE) .- Ovid Guzmán López, one of the children of the Joaquín “El Chapo” capo and heir to the Sinaloa Cartel, has just declared himself guilty in a Chicago court, and the big question now is the following: What information about the much he possesses will share with EU?

When a criminal agrees to betray his accomplices, American prosecutors usually reduce sentences, regardless of whether the United States government itself has labeled drug trafficking groups, such as the Sinaloa Cartel, a terrorist group.

According to Efe, the researcher at the Brookings Analysis Center, Vanda Felbab-Brown, the key question here is if Ovid Guzmán López “El Mouse” will give information only about the criminal groups-the Sinaloa Cartel or the Jalisco Nueva Generación Cartel-or if it will go further and will splash various Mexican institutions.

“Can (could give information) also about corruption networks that operate in various state institutions, various police forces, the army, the Sinaloa government, and also beyond Sinaloa, at the federal level?” Asks the director of the Fentanyl epidemic in North America and the global reach of synthetic opioids in Brookings.

Who are “Los Chapitos”?

In 2012 the US government included Ovid Guzmán López in the list of international drug traffickers ´Kingpin Act´ for considering that he played “a relevant role in his father’s activities” and EU until he pointed out that he ordered the murder of a “popular Mexican singer” who did not want to go to his wedding but that the identity never knew.

Four of the children of the Chapo are known as “the minors” or “Los Chiquillos”; A group of drug traffickers composed of: “El Mouse”, Iván Archivaldo Guzmán Salazar “El Chapito”, Jesús Alfredo Guzmán Salazar “El Alfredillo” and Joaquín Guzmán López “El Güero Moreno”, who is in a Chicago prison after surrendering voluntarily and is expected to be convicted next week.

The brothers supervised 11 methamphetamine laboratories in Sinaloa, where they produced an estimate of up to 5,000 pounds or 2,267 kilograms of methamphetamines, which are mainly sold to other members of the Sinaloa cartel and drug distributors in the United States and Canada, according to the Department of Justice.

Internal War of the Sinaloa Cartel

Peter Reuter, a professor at the Faculty of Public Policies and Department of Criminology at the University of Maryland, details Efe that initially the Sinaloa Cartel was led by the “Chapo” and almost at the same time by Ismael “El Mayo” Zambada.

According to the expert, for a while, the Sinaloa cartel was a federation, with two elements: one associated with the Chapitos and the other with the “May” and his family.

The union even materialized in marriages between the two families, points the professor of the University of Maryland.

In that sense, Felbab-Brown explains that the “May” is the godfather of several of the Chapitos.

“Then the relationship was attributed when the brothers became ostentatious, violent, shameless, ignoring all kinds of restrictions of the old guard personified in May,” notes the researcher.

Beyond the generational change, there have been several friction points between the two families.

Like the fact that Vicente Zambada Niebla “El Vicentillo”, and Jesús Reynaldo “The Zambada King” (son and brother of the “May2) declared against the” Chapo “in his trial in Brooklyn, where he was sentenced to life imprisonment in July 2019, plus 30 additional years.

To this is added to the strange circumstances surrounding Joaquín Guzmán López in July 2024, who arrived in the US on a private flight with the May.

Although the circumstances that surrounded that flight never clarified, it seems that Joaquin gave Zambada as part of an agreement with the Prosecutor’s Office. Felbab-Brown goes further and describes it as a “kidnapping.”

The expert would not be surprised that in her agreement with EU Ovid and Joaquín Guzmán López give information to incriminate the “May”, and vice versa.

The conflict between the Chapitos and the Mayos has caused more than 1,000 dead in Sinaloa since it began, on September 9.

“The area is plunged into intense violence between the branch of ‘Los Chapitos’ and that of ‘Los Mayitos’, and also with the Jalisco Nueva Generación cartel, whom ‘The Chapitos’ have apparently contacted for a possible alliance,” adds Felbab-Brown.
