Monarch: Legacy of Monsters is rapidly becoming one of the best sci-fi action shows on Apple TV. The Monsterverse has had some great successes and terrible failures, but while Monarch: Legacy of Monsters rewrites the rules of cinematic universes, this risk looks set to pay off. The show has an 82% positive critics’ rating on Rotten Tomatoes, and features A-list cast members.

The show explores major events in the Monsterverse timeline, and is mostly set in 2015, shortly after the events of the 2014 Godzilla movie. While the Monsterverse is a sprawling and complex franchise, Monarch: Legacy of Monsters is designed to be accessible to newcomers, and the shared universe sci-fi keeps getting better, cementing Apple TV as the best streaming platform for sci-fi.

Apple TV is gaining a great reputation for ambitious and exciting sci-fi TV shows. Unlike Netflix, which regularly cancels its most promising series, Apple TV has many great completed sci-fi series everyone should watch, as it tends to give complex projects more of a chance. This has led to the platform hosting some of the best recent sci-fi shows, like Severance and Foundation.

Monarch: Legacy of Monsters ranks among the platform’s highest-rated sci-fi series and is a cornerstone of the platform’s content, even outside the genre. The show has an impressively high production value, with many episodes featuring cinematic action sequences that rival those found in any blockbuster movie, even those in the Monsterverse franchise. This great success brings exciting possibilities to Apple TV.

Most of Apple TV’s great sci-fi projects are original shows like For All Mankind or adapted from great prestige sci-fi novels, like Foundation. However, the Monsterverse is already one of the most beloved story franchises in the world. Monarch: Legacy of Monsters made Apple TV a frontrunner in the streaming wars, and its success could make the platform the continued home of the Monsterverse.

After the great success of season 1, which established Monarch and set up the world and its Titans, season 2 raises the stakes. The latest series significantly expands the franchise lore, adding more Titans in the Monsterverse, as well as Scarabs, a creature that looks like the iconic Alien facehuggers. These minor monsters help to make the Monsterverse feel richer and more well-inhabited.

Season 2 has taken the action to the extreme without losing sight of the plot and character development. The series leans further into the world of giant kaiju and the accompanying spectacle, but also maintains its human element. Monarch: Legacy of Monsters season 2’s shocking death of a main character sets up several possible storylines, hinting at drastic changes in the Monsterverse.

While the series is releasing weekly episodes rather than following Netflix’s binge-watching model, it appears that Monarch: Legacy of Monsters is setting up an infamous Godzilla plot device. A time travel element would potentially open up the franchise for multiple spin-offs, keeping Monarch: Legacy of Monsters in place as one of Apple TV’s best and most exciting sci-fi shows.
