Will Ferrell is hitting the green in The Hawk.
While it has been known for some time that Will Ferrell was developing a new Netflix comedy series set in the golf world, the show has now been officially renamed The Hawk. The series, which also stars Molly Shannon, Jimmy Tatro, David Hornsby, Chris Parnell, Fortune Feimster, and Luke Wilson, sees a 2004 golf champion attempting to mount a comeback against competition that includes his own son.
Netflix has now dropped the official teaser for The Hawk. The 30-second video features Will Ferrell with curly blond hair and a visor, posing in dramatic lighting while a deep voice announces the return of an American hero, Lonnie “The Hawk” Hawkins.
Ferrell then directly addresses the camera, saying, “that’s me, I’m him. I’m who they’re talking about. If you’re wondering.” The teaser also reveals that The Hawk season 1 will debut in summer 2026. Check out the video below:
While the teaser is brief and only focuses on the protagonist of The Hawk, it promises that the new character will retain some of the iconic attributes of many of the leads of previous Will Ferrell movies. In addition to Lonnie Hawkins being a striving underdog, he retains the brash bravado of many of the legendary actor’s iconic characters, which is typically unearned.
In this way, it seems like The Hawk is truly following in the footsteps of many of Ferrell’s previous starring vehicles. Over the years, the actor has portrayed characters who have participated in a wide variety of sports, many of which are slightly more unusual or uncommon.
This roster of sports includes soccer (2005’s Kicking & Screaming), NASCAR (2006’s Talladega Nights: The Ballad of Ricky Bobby), figure skating (2007’s Blades of Glory), and basketball (2008’s Semi-Pro). Additionally, Ferrell portrayed the owner of a car dealership in the HBO baseball series Eastbound & Down, which he also produced.
His aspiring musician character in 2020’s Eurovision Song Contest: The Story of Fire Saga also bears many similarities to the characters from his sports movies. However, what makes The Hawk unique is that it offers Ferrell a chance to explore the character more thoroughly than he ever has before.
Because The Hawk is a television series in which he is the lead, he will be given much more screen time than usual to bring Lonnie Hawkins to life. It remains to be seen if that means that the character will be deeper than those in some of his other sports-related projects, or if this opportunity will merely give him more time to be ridiculous and laughable.
