While fans patiently wait for more news about The Witcher 4, including whether or not it will launch in 2027, a brand-new questline has dropped in a mod for The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt. It may be unofficial, but Dawn over Kovir may be akin to how The Witcher 3’s rumored DLC could look.
According to its Nexus Mods page, Dawn over Kovir bridges a narrative gap between The Witcher 3 and The Witcher 4 via a questline starring a playable Ciri in the eponymous Kingdom of Kovir. Even if we never receive an official DLC expansion like the one that is often rumored nowadays, this mod may scratch that itch and be a phenomenal prelude to The Witcher 4 itself.
This Is The Witcher 3 DLC We’ve Waited For
The Witcher 4 is set in Kovir, or at least introduces Kovir as one of many locations players can presumably visit and explore. As such, modder Alexander Fandera-Maslov’s Dawn over Kovir can provide a tiny glimpse of what the kingdom may be like in this new Witcher game.
Inspired by The Witcher 4’s cinematic reveal trailer, the mod is expected to take 45 minutes to an hour and a half to complete. Plus, future updates to Dawn over Kovir will apparently “refine animations and gameplay components, and add voice acting.”
How close Dawn over Kovir comes to the story told in a new Witcher 3 DLC or The Witcher 4 will be compelling to see, and the mod even anticipates there being some overlap between them, which would make for a terrific reason to play this mod beforehand. Plus, Ciri being Witcher 4’s lead protagonist makes her an even more captivating character, so more time to play as her before the fourth installment is released is nothing but a boon.
The Witcher 3’s DLC Isn’t Needed Anymore
It’ll be fantastic if it’s ever officially revealed that there is a new Witcher 3 DLC expansion in development. Better yet, a shadow drop could be an absolutely incredible moment in the video game industry, especially if the DLC had the same scale and scope as Blood and Wine or Hearts of Stone.
Meanwhile, while it may only be a tenth of a fraction of what these official DLCs offer, Dawn over Kovir is here, and it’s a perfectly good placeholder for what may be to come. If nothing else, it’s clear that Witcher 3 players are excited about how the events of The Witcher 3 will lead to the story in The Witcher 4 and how Ciri’s journey will unfold in the upcoming game.
