The XV Summit of the World Forum on Migration and Development begins this Tuesday in the Colombian city of Riohacha to put the rights of migrants in the center of the agenda and their contributions to the countries that host them.

“With facts and actions, Colombia has shown that the commitment to migrant populations is deep and their fruits go beyond the indicators,” said Colombian Foreign Minister, Rosa Villavicencio, host of the three -day meeting.

The Foreign Ministry confirmed the assistance of representatives from more than 40 countries, as well as international organizations, civil society and businessmen.

Among the confirmed delegations are those of Canada, Spain, France, Mexico, Austria, Belgium, Brazil, Ecuador, Peru, El Salvador, Paraguay, Cuba, India, Switzerland, Madagascar, Bangladesh, Philippines, Myanmar, China and South Africa.

“It is time to add efforts, guarantee rights and understand that human mobility and migration are the fundamental engine of all societies, regions and countries of the world,” said the Foreign Ministry.

The forum will address six central themes, the first of which is the impact of women on world migration and development.

The others are children and young people as innovators for the development of tomorrow; the interaction of the media and culture to build and deconstruct the reality of migration; climate change and labor routes; regional cooperation and integration, and new technologies and digitalization to improve migration management and regular migratory pathways.

“All tables and all deliberative space will be around these approaches with very special gender, the need to put on the table the contribution of women, their contribution in these migratory processes and also the need for policies that recognize young people and children in human mobility processes with equal opportunities,” Villavicencio said last week.

The Forum will also have a dialogue space for mayors, entrepreneurs and young people in order to promote “the construction of public policies from the territories and recognizing the importance of local integration into immigration governance.”

“As a chancellor, as a migrant woman and human rights defender, it is a priority for me that our voices are heard, especially in times of discrimination, xenophobia and migratory policies approaches that threaten human rights and the dignity of all migrant populations,” said the Colombian minister.
