Elden Ring fans are starting to get excited about the upcoming film from Alex Garland and A24 after recent set footage leaked online. Further, with official confirmation that filming is going to start as soon as next week, there’s a lot to look forward to if you’re an Elden Ring fan.

From the leaked set footage alone, however, Elden Ring fans have started to piece together various crucial details about the film that have previously been the source of great speculation, such as the official timeline, setting, and whether the story will take place prior to or after The Shattering (via Reddit).

Elden Ring Leaked Set Images Reveal Crucial Story Details

There’s been great debate over what shape the Elden Ring film from Alex Garland and A24 is going to take, particularly when it comes to the movie’s timeline. The recent fan-recorded leaks of the Elden Ring film set, however, all but confirm something that fans have been divided on since the film’s announcement back in 2025.

Many players have speculated that the film could take place pre-Shattering in the Elden Ring universe, as this would be among the most intriguing choices in terms of lore. However, the leaked set footage features a Statue of Marika that is in a dilapidated state, the same way you’d experience it in the game itself, indicating that the film (or at least parts of it) will take place after the Shattering in the Elden Ring universe.

If you need a bit of a refresher on Elden Ring lore, “The Shattering” refers to the catastrophic war that followed the destruction of the Elden Ring, the source of order in the Lands Between. After Queen Marika shattered it, her demigod children claimed the fragments (i.e., Great Runes) and turned on each other in a brutal stalemate that left the world broken and leaderless. This conflict sets the stage for the game, where Tarnished warriors return to restore order.

Elden Ring Fans Are Torn On Film’s Timeline

While it’s not a huge surprise that the film would likely take place after The Shattering, it’s slightly disappointing for some players who were hopeful they’d get a story that delved further into pre-Shattering lore. Fans like Cutest_Kitten_Citre argued for a story told before-hand, and that they want to see “pre-snake Rykard … [Melania and Radahn] in their prime, Ranni plotting,” etc.

TheHumanCompulsion is “hoping for a prequel. Something that explains why Marika would break the Elden Ring,” or why “Godwyn’s murder resulted in Marika breaking the Elden Ring.” However, based on how torn up and destroyed the film set looks in the leaks, a story that serves as a “prequel” to the game seems increasingly unlikely.

Ultimately, no official details about the film’s story and/or timeline have been confirmed, and it’s entirely possible that we will get additional info on the plot in the coming months. With filming seemingly confirmed to begin next week, Elden Ring fans are keeping their fingers crossed that the big screen adaptation does the game justice.
