A co-founder of Facebook is ready to part ways with his Hudson Valley estate.
Chris Hughes and husband Sean Eldridge listed the property known as Whippoorwill Farm in the Putnam County hamlet of Garrison for $10 million, the Wall Street Journal reported. They purchased the property in 2011 for $6 million and proceeded to spend millions on upgrades.Â
The estate covers more than 80 acres in the affluent community, which features other large, historic properties. The main house, more than 200 years old, has five bedrooms; a century-old structure has three bedrooms, while a guest barn built in the last decade has four bedrooms.
The grounds include an updated swimming pool, a tennis/pickleball court, hiking trails and a pair of ponds.
The home is one of the most expensive available in the Hudson Valley. It was once owned by a supporter of the American Craft movement, who was married to a descendant of Cornelius Vanderbilt.
Houlihan Lawrence’s Angela Kessel has the listing.
Hughes’ family has been using the property for weekends and vacations, as they live full-time in Manhattan.. The couple in 2016 bought a 4,200-square-foot townhouse on West 12th Street for $23.5 million; they sold a 4,200-square-foot condo in Soho for $8.5 million prior to that purchase.
While Hughes co-founded Facebook, he left the company in 2007 and has since called for the breakup of the tech giant, citing concerns about misinformation, privacy and mental health. Eldridge, a political activist, mounted an unsuccessful congressional campaign in 2014.
Not every vast Hudson Valley abode moves quickly through the market. A couple tried selling their Hyde Park home on the Hudson River in 2021 for $45 million, only to lose the home to a finance litigation firm, which turned around and relisted the property at the start of the year for a measly $11.25 million. It remains on the market.
