President Claudia Sheinbaum said that the sentence that the former Secretary of Public Security (2006-2012), Genaro García Luna, will receive this Tuesday for drug trafficking in the United States, should focus on the evidence that was presented against him and not divert attention.

“The big issue here, the underlying issue, is how someone, even who was awarded at the behest of the United States (and) who former president (Felipe) Calderón (2006-2012) spoke wonderfully about his former Secretary of Security, is today imprisoned in the United States because it is proven that he was linked to drug trafficking,” he said.

Questioned in her morning conference about the request of García Luna’s lawyer, who revealed that his client asked the Federal Court of the Eastern District of New York to speak and dress as a civilian during the hearing in which the sentence will be handed down, Sheinbaum said that “it is his right.”

However, he clarified that what is important is all the evidence that was presented against him.

“(The issue is) that a war against drugs was led by a person who, today it is known, was linked to drug trafficking. That is the central issue, regardless of whether he is dressed in one way or another,” he insisted.

García Luna led the “war on drugs” in Mexico and on October 15 he will receive his sentence after a jury found him guilty in February of charges of drug trafficking, organized crime and false testimony before US authorities.

The former official’s defense requested the lesser sentence, but last September the prosecutor’s office for the Eastern District of New York argued that he deserves a sentence of life imprisonment and a minimum fine of $5 million.
