The land that the Mexican tomato has won in the United States is because of its quality and not because of a unfair trade practice, so the compensatory quota will only affect the consumers of that country, the Government of Claudia Sheinbaum responded to the measure imposed today by the Department of Commerce.
Washington reported earlier that he withdrew from a 2019 agreement that suspended an anti -dumping investigation into fresh tomatoes from Mexico, and will impose rights of 17.09% to most shipments.
“The Secretariats of Economy and Agriculture express their disagreement with the decision announced on Monday, since they consider it unfair and against interest not only of Mexican producers, but of the American industry,” they said in a joint statement.

The Mexican government reported that it will continue to accompany national producers to achieve an agreement that suspends the compensatory quota announced today, as happened in 2019.
That year, the anti -dumping research suspension agreement was restored at four months, the units presented.
“As in the previous occasions in which there was differentia, Mexico will know how to find the solution and the reason will prevail,” they added.
They affirmed that because two out of three tomatoes consumed in the United States are harvested in Mexico, the compensatory quota that will do will affect US consumers, since it will be impossible to replace Mexican tomato.

They recalled that since 1996, American producers of Jitomate requested a precautionary measure claiming an alleged dumping (sale below the cost of production) by Mexican exporters, and that has been suspended five times, the last one in 2019.
They said that during the last 90 days, the government accompanied producers in their negotiation with their US counterparts.
They detailed that Mexicans made “constructive proposals” to try to reach a good agreement, but that “despite being very positive for the United States, they were not accepted for political reasons.”
They added that they will continue to support national producers in their search for new international markets.
