Rafael García, vice president of the Canada Chamber of Commerce in Mexico (Canchammx), reported that Canada’s Prime Minister Mark Carney, and President Claudia Sheinbaum spoke of greater cooperation on the subject of natural gas.

“A greater diversification I think it is necessary, Mark Kearney and Claudia Shienbaum (talked) in Calgary (a plan to) try to reduce the 70 percent dependence on the natural gas in the United States through Canada,” said the business representative.

The price of the thousand BTU of the United States is the second cheapest in the world, since it is in 3 dollars, he said within the fifth edition of our International Coparmex 2025 Boards.

He added that the thousand BTU in the European Union is in $ 15, in Asia is at $ 20 and in Canada it costs a dollar.

“Bringing (Natural Gas from Canada to Mexico) costs much more, but through LNG plants it can be interesting. Right now you are talking about the American gas, give way to the entire part of the permine, give all exit to this gas, but also make a reconfiguration so you can import or export depending on how the market is.”

On June 17, 2025, Prime Minister Mark Carney met with the president of Mexico, Claudia Sheinbaum, at the G7 Leaders of 2025 in Kananaskis, Alberta.

Based on the long relationship between Canada and Mexico, leaders discussed the close economic integration that has benefited the workers and companies of both countries.

Prime Minister Carney and President Sheinbaum spoke about the shared priorities of the G7, including economic and energy security, as well as the construction of reliable supply chains.

The leaders agreed to deepen bilateral collaboration at the ministerial level, with special attention to trade, energy, agriculture and security.

Canada has an oil called Oil Sands, which is extrapeted and similar to Mayan crude, Rafael García recalled.

“They have technologies on how to make extractions and give more value to our hydrocarbons,” said the vice president of the Canada Chamber of Commerce in Mexico.

We must integrate more, we must have a world in which you can, at least in feed -free energy issue, is what is being intended, he said.

Data Centers trigger natural gas consumption

“If you see the natural gas growth prospects 5 years ago and those that you see today has nothing to do,” said the representative.

5 years to date for the entire issue of data centers and artificial intelligence has increased demand perspectives up to 200 percent, he said.

Data Centers require constant and reliable energy such as natural gas, but the power that this generates, said Rafael García.

“We have the concept of Energy Adionion, that is, we need more natural gas, more renewable energy, more nuclear energy and more of all energy sources, even more oil.”

Partners buy gas, oil and electricity

The United States is the great ally of Mexico, I do not see anywhere that there is an issue that we are going to close the gas valve, unless it is a theme of climate or other things like it happened a few years ago,

But diversifying the purchase of natural gas is always important, as well as doing it without rates and that there are electrons and molecules flows is more important.

Canada sells Gas to the United States, but also buys oil and is reciprocal: “With the pipeline systems that are in the three countries you can automatically be importing and exporting electricity, natural gas, oil and refined.”

“Mexico directly imports 70 percent of the United States natural gas, but we sell raw to the United States, but then we buy oil,” said the Vice President of the Canada Chamber of Commerce in Mexico.

He added that Mexico exports through the Sonora Electrons and Electricity Plan to the south of Arizona. “Mexico, the United States and Canada are very integrated,” concluded Rafael García.
