The United States and Saudi Arabia signed a strategic agreement on artificial intelligence (AI) to unite the potential of both countries to advance the development of the tool in the midst of the race to take the lead, both countries reported this Wednesday.

The agreement was signed by the foreign ministers, Marco Rubio and Faisal bin Farhan Al Saud, during the visit of the Saudi crown prince. Mohamed bin Salmán, to the White House, represents a new step in the alliance of the two countries, promoted by President Donald Trump.

Saudi Arabia seeks to be a technological power

Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman has already expressed his intention to transform Saudi Arabia from an oil power to a technology leader and according to the New York Times he is investing money in data centers and collaborating with American and Chinese technology giants, who are leading the AI ​​race.

Both parties highlighted that this partnership will strengthen “economic relations between Saudi and American companies in future technologies, which will pave the way for the development of innovative and promising solutions in various critical industries, such as health, education, energy, mining and transportation.”

The alliance highlights, according to the statement, the commitment of both countries to “promote innovation and technological progress” to guarantee security and economic prosperity in the future.

During Tuesday’s meeting, in which Trump received Bin Salman with head of state honors, they also agreed on the sale to Riyadh of the sophisticated F-35 fighter jets, manufactured by the United States, and a cooperation agreement on nuclear energy for civil purposes.
