The Mexico City Prosecutor’s Office reported that it investigates speeding as a possible cause of the explosion of the gas pipe on Wednesday in Iztapalapa, which has left at least eight dead and almost a hundred injured.

In a press conference, prosecutor Bertha Mayor Luján explained that “there are two very important lines of investigation that the Prosecutor’s Office has”, including speeding has caused the accident that has left eight dead people and 86 wounds.

“The preliminary information we have so far is that there is likely to have speeding,” he said.

However, the prosecutor said that the first expert opinions are about to be completed at the accident site, which will formally determine the cause of the explosion.

Mayor Luján pointed out that the second line is “related to compliance with the regulation by the company”, for which the coordination with the Security, Energy and Environment Agency (ASEA), an institution responsible for regulating these types of companies will be “fundamental”.

He indicated that the first line of research, linked to possible speeding, has to do directly with the truck driver, who remains hospitalized, although he is “in detainee” for his alleged responsibility in the facts.

He also pointed out that the Prosecutor’s Office has maintained contact with the company that owns the pipeline, Silza conveyor, which since Thursday approached the authorities “with all the mood of collaborating.”

“The company is being investigated, it is as investigated, such as the driver, by the lines of research that is being analyzed,” said Mayor Luján.

Until now, the authorities have reported eight killed by the explosion that occurred on Wednesday afternoon when a tank truck with a capacity of 49,500 liters overturned and exploded on the Ignacio Zaragoza road, at the height of the Concordia bridge.

In addition, 67 hospitalized people, six in serious and 19 in a delicate state, in addition to 19 injured ones that have already been discharged from hospitals have been reported.
