Threads, the X competitor created by goal that sought to capitalize on the discontent of the users after the acquisition and change of Twitter brand by multimillionaire Elon Musk, is approaching to overcome X in daily active users on mobile devices, according to data shared with Forbes by SimilarWeb.

The number of Daily Active Users of THREADS has constantly increased during the last year, while X active users in the United States have decreased slightly, according to similar data.

X continues to lead in front of Threads, with around 23.1 million active users daily on mobile devices in the United States to July 15, according to SimilarWeb, although its advantage has been drastically reduced over time.

On this same date last year, X had approximately 21 million more active users on mobile devices in the United States than Threads.

Will Threads exceed x?
It is not clear. David Carr, news editor and insight research in Similarweb, told Forbes that there are “solid evidence” that Threads is reaching X, particularly on mobile devices, but that “he is not sure that Threads exceeds X”. X superior web traffic suggests that some users still visit X to see the topics of the moment, even if they are not regular users of the mobile app, Carr said.

Key history
Meta, by Mark Zuckerberg, began launching Threads in most countries in July 2023, and later that year in Nations of the European Union. The launch came months after Musk bought Twitter in October 2022, which caused a negative reaction and an exodus of some users towards competing platforms after Musk changed the name of the network to “X” and made important changes in its verification process, content moderation policies and other functions. The use of X continued to decrease after the presidential elections of 2024, after which President Donald Trump returned to office and appointed Musk to direct the Government Efficiency Department, although it is not clear how much of the fall in the use of X users is due to Musk’s political activities. Other competitors, such as Bluesky, have also gained ground as an alternative to X, although Bluesky’s active daily use is far behind the finish line and Threads among mobile devices users in the US, with about 1 million daily users, according to similar data.

Assessment according to Forbes
Musk is the richest person in the world according to Forbes estimates, with a fortune of 413 billion dollars to Friday, thanks in large part to their participations in their Tesla and Spacex companies. Zuckerberg, who has about 13% of the goal shares, is the third richest person, with a net worth of 242.8 billion dollars, according to Forbes estimates.
